Each year, the Keeneland September Yearling Sale offers more future graded stakes winners and champions than at all other sales companies combined. Graduates can be found in the most elite winner’s circles in the world, from the Triple Crown to Royal Ascot to Dubai to the Breeders’ Cup. The most select are in Book 1, where all four of our 2018 purchases were found. Centennial Farms’ acquisition team, Dr. Stephen Carr and Paula Parsons, combed through the marathon of a sale using a series of physical assessments, veterinary exams, and pedigree analysis to select a quartet of colts. Two of these colts are by incredibly exciting freshman sires, two by established leading sires of Classic winners, and all four boast another tremendous stallion in their immediate female family. We couldn’t be more delighted with the new additions for our latest partnership:

HONOR CODE – HEIR WORTHY, by MEDAGLIA D’ORO

Honor Code - Heir Worthy, by Medaglia d'Oro

Purchased for $375,000

One of the most exciting freshman yearling sires of 2018 is Honor Code and Centennial Farms is delighted to be able to offer this Honor Code colt out of a full sister to a grade one winner.

From the last crop of A.P. Indy, Honor Code is also one his best-bred and most accomplished stallion sons. In addition to being by a Horse of the Year and Leading Sire, Honor Code is out of the stakes winning and multiple graded stakes producing Storm Cat mare Serena’s Cat. His second dam, stakes winning Serena’s Tune, is by Mr. Prospector out of the legendary Serena’s Song. Honor Code earned honors as Champion Older Horse for victories in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2), the Whitney Stakes (G1), and the Metropolitan Handicap (G1). He also won the Remsen Stakes (G2) at two.

This colt is out the Medaglia d’Oro mare Heir Worthy, a sister to the Carter Handicap (G1) victor and Spendthrift Farm stallion Warrior’s Reward. The second dam, For All You Do, is a daughter of Seeking the Gold, out of the listed stakes placed Salina Cookie. Salina Cookie is a three-quarters sister to Leap Lively, a group winner and multiple group one placed runner in England. Leap Lively went on to be the dam of Forest Flower, a champion at two, and winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) at three.

Most impressive is the true depth of this pedigree found in the fourth dam Quilloquick. She is ancestress of 37 stakes winners, 16 group or graded, also including the three-time grade one winner High Yield; champion Catch A Glimpse, successful in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and Belmont Oaks (G1); and champion Ruud Awakening.

This colt is a product of the A.P. Indy/Medaglia d’Oro cross that has also produced grade one winner Rachel’s Valentina and stakes winners Haybusa Maca O and Bronze Star. He also owns linebreeding to My Charmer, the dam of Seattle Slew.

CARPE DIEM – KISSED BY A STAR, by KINGMAMBO

Life On Top, Carpe Diem - Kissed by a Star

Purchased for $250,000

Among the best of his crop at two and three, Carpe Diem is a first year son of champion racehorse, multiple Leading Sire, and now sire of sires, Giant’s Causeway. Here Centennial presents a Carpe Diem colt out of a multiple winner producing half-sister to major sire Hard Spun.

At two, Carpe Diem won a Saratoga maiden special weight and the Breeders’ Futurity (G1), the latter by 6¼ lengths, before finishing second in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile (G1). The following year he won the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) by five lengths and the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) by three lengths before suffering a career-ending injury in the Kentucky Derby (G1) as third choice behind favored American Pharoah.

This son of Carpe Diem is out of Kissed by a Star, a daughter of classic winner and outstanding sire and broodmare sire Kingmambo. Kissed by a Star is already dam of the talented English runner and four time winner Franklin D. Rings of Jupiter, another offspring, is a winner of three races, one in 2018.

Most exciting is that Kissed by a Star is half-sister to Hard Spun. One of the stars of a vintage crop, Hard Spun won the King’s Bishop Stakes (G1), Lane’s End Stakes (G2), Kentucky Cup Classic Stakes (G2), LeComte Stakes (G3) and finished on the board in the Kentucky Derby (G1), Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), and Preakness Stakes (G1). A record-breaking sire with his first crop, Hard Spun is now sire of 64 stakes winners, nine grade one, including Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Questing, Centennial’s own Wicked Strong, Hard Aces, Zo Impressive, Hardest Core, and Smooth Roller. In addition to Hard Spun, Kissed by a Star is a half-sister to stakes winner Our Rite of Spring and multiple stakes placed Wild Current.

The dam of Kissed by a Star is stakes winning and graded placed Turkish Tryst, a half-sister to multiple stakes producer Darby Lake. Kissed by a Star’s second dam, Darbyvail, is half-sister to Champion Three-Year-Old Colt Little Current who won the Preakness Stakes (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1). Darbyvail is by Epsom Derby (G1) hero, Roberto, out of Luiana, a half-sister to champions Chateaugay, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, and Primonetta, whose prominent wins included the Alabama and Spinster.

Twice Horse of the Year, Curlin has wasted no time in rising to the forefront of the North American stallion elite. Centennial’s Curlin colt is not only bred on a proven grade one producing cross, but owns a true stallion pedigree.

Following the footsteps of his father, two-time Leading Sire Smart Strike, Curlin is already responsible for nearly 50 stakes winners including recent champions Good Magic and Stellar Wind; the Preakness Stakes (G1) hero, Exaggerator; Palace Malice, whose triumphs included the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Metropolitan Handicap (G1); Keen Ice, the Travers Stakes (G1) scorer; three-time grade one winner Curalina; Connect, victorious in the Cigar Mile (G1); and Off The Tracks, successful in the Mother Goose Stakes (G1).

The dam of this colt is the Awesome Again daughter Worshipper. A winner at two, Worshipper is the dam of sprint scorer Luna Lover with her first foal. Worshipper is half-sister to a true celebrity in Pulpit. Winner of the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), Pulpit went on to a career as an outstanding sire with 74 stakes winners, nearly 50 graded, and 12 grade one winners, among them record-breaking three-time leading sire Tapit, and three-time grade one winning sprinter Lord Nelson, as well as Rutherienne, Sky Mesa, Stroll, Purge, Power Broker, Ice Box, Pyro, Mr. Speaker, and Centennial’s own Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and Metropolitan Handicap (G1) winner Corinthian.

The dam of Worshipper, the Mr. Prospector mare Preach, won the Frizette Stakes (G1) at two. Preach is a sister to Yarn, the dam of King’s Bishop Stakes (G2) victor and Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds Tale of the Cat, and ancestress of ten other stakes winners, including Johannesburg, Champion Two-Year-Old Colt in Europe and North American and grandsire of Justify via worldwide stallion sensation Scat Daddy.

In addition to the overall quality of his pedigree, this colt is bred on a remarkably successful cross. There are only three starters by Curlin out of Awesome Again mares and all are stakes winners including Keen Ice – conqueror of American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes (G1). Curlin is out of a mare by Deputy Minister, also the sire of Awesome Again, and Deputy Minister inbreeding is also found in four other Curlin stakes winners, including the three-time grade one winner Curalina and Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) captor Vino Rosso.

A brilliant racehorse, Pioneerof the Nile is the only stallion at stud to have sired a North American Triple Crown winner. Here we have a Pioneerof the Nile colt whose granddam is a sister to the outstanding runner and sire Seeking the Gold.

Winner of the CashCall Futurity (G1) at two, Pioneerof the Nile captured three additional graded stakes including the Santa Anita Derby (G1) prior to his second place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). A son of classic winner and major sire Empire Maker, with his first four crops Pioneerof the Nile is sire of 21 stakes winners, including American Pharoah, who became the first Triple Crown winner since 1978; Champion Two-Year-Old Colt Classic Empire, and grade one winner Midnight Storm. Early indications point toward Pioneerof the Nile also becoming a sire of sires as his graded stakes winning son Cairo Prince is among the leading freshman sires of 2018.

Delicate Affair, the dam of this colt, is a winner producer whose two-year-old has also shown considerable promise in her only start. This Danzig granddaughter is three-quarters sister to Survivalist, winner of the Gotham Stakes (G3) and runner-up in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1), and to multiple graded stakes placed Polish Minor. Delicate Affair is also half-sister to stakes winner Power Game.

The dam of Delicate Affair is the Mr. Prospector mare Miner’s Game, a sister to multiple grade one winner and Leading Sire Seeking the Gold. Miner’s Game is also a half-sister to the Remsen Stakes (G1) winner Fast Play, graded winner Stacked Pack, Gambling Fool, the dam of stakes winner Zafolia, and Tricky Game, dam of Centennial Farms’ millionaire King Cugat.

This classically-bred colt from a stallion family is bred on the extremely successful Empire Maker/Danzig cross that has already produced nine stakes winners, including grade one winner Acoma, and graded winners Broadway Empire, Frivolous, Acting Happy, Brooch, and Keri Belle. He is also closely related to grade two winning Nefertini, who is by Empire Maker out of a half-sister to the dam of this colt.
