2024 CONGRESS PARK, LLC

There’s no other sale quite like the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale – boutique, an event, and full of world-class horses. Dr. Carr and Paula Parsons did a phenomenal job narrowing down the catalog to a handful of horses that met our standards and it didn’t take long to land one. The first horse through the same ring from which we purchased Champion Rubiano, Belmont Stakes winner Colonial Affair, Breeders’ Cup victor Corinthian, and more joined the roster just minutes after bidding opened.

CHARLATAN – CALL ME CANDY by CANDY RIDE

A colt by Charlatan out of the Candy Ride mare Call Me Candy purchased at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale and available as the Congress Park LLC Thoroughbred racing partnership.

Purchased for $375,000

There are few more exciting sires represented by their first crop of yearlings in 2024 than Charlatan. A son of Champion Sprinter, and sire of sires, Speightstown, Charlatan was undefeated in North America, scoring by 4½ lengths in the Malibu Stakes (G1) and by six lengths in the Arkansas Derby (G1).

This Charlatan colt is of particular interest as he’s very closely related to a brilliant speedster who is now an exciting young sire.

He is the first foal of Call Me Candy, a daughter of undefeated Candy Ride, the sire of Hall of Famer and leading sire Gun Runner, and the broodmare sire of eight grade one winners and no less than 50 individual stakes winners.

Call Me Candy is half-sister to Bellera, who captured the Ladies Handicap and Comely Stakes (G3) in successive starts, and to Life Imitates Art, successful in the Dania Beach Stakes (G3) and Sophomore Turf Stakes. She is also half-sister to Quippery, dam of Regret Handicap (G3) scorer Beyond Blame, and of Candy Ride’s stakes placed daughter Blamethechampagne.

The second dam, Habiboo, by Unbridled’s Song, was three times graded stakes placed, including when second in the First Flight Handicap (G2). Habiboo is a three-quarters sister to Rushin No Blushin, the dam of Jack Christopher. Undefeated at distances of a mile or less, this brilliant performer captured the Champagne Stakes (G1) at two, and the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1), Woody Stephens Stakes (G1), and Pat Day Mile Stakes (G2) at three. Jack Christopher, a highly regarded young Kentucky stallion, is by Munnings, a son of Speightstown just like Charlatan, making this colt an extremely close relative to that spectacular runner.

Habiboo is also half-sister to Street Boss, a sprint star who captured the Triple Bend Invitational Handicap (G1) and Bing Crosby Handicap (G1). He has been a highly successful stallion around the world, with Australian Champion and seven-time G1 victor Anamoe to his credit abroad and horses like Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Cathryn Sophia and Arkansas Derby (G1) scorer Danza in the United States.

Habiboo’s dam, stakes placed Blushing Ogygian, is out of Fruhlingschochzeit, a black-type daughter of classic French 1,000 Guineas (G1) runner-up Fruhlingstag, dam of three stakes winners, including Brooklyn Handicap (G2) winner Running Stag, and ancestress of last year’s German Derby (G1) hero, Fantastic Moon. Just a little further back, this is the famed Marcel Boussac/Aga Khan family stemming from stakes winner Dalama, whose numerous stakes wining descendants also include French Derby (G1) winning Champion Almanzor.

This colt is bred on a cross that is rated A++ by TrueNicks. The late Speightstown’s credentials as a sire of sires speaks for itself. He is responsible for perennial leading sire Munnings, top regional sires like Central Banker and Tamarkuz, and Top 10 freshman sire Echo Town.
