STREET SENSE – PURE POISON by HONOR CODE

A colt by Street Sense out of the Honor Code made Pure Poison purchased at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale and available as the 2023 Madison, LLC thoroughbred racing partnership.

Purchased for $375,000

The first horse to capture both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1), Street Sense has gone on to worldwide success as a sire.

Now fast closing in on 100 stakes winners, Street Sense has been represented by 40 graded stakes winners, and 12 grade one winners, including exciting young Kentucky-based sires McKinzie, Maxfield, and Speaker’s Corner, in addition to Sweet Reason, Wedding Toast, Aubby K, Callback, and Street Fancy.

This Street Sense colt is the first foal of Pure Poison, who is by A.P. Indy’s champion son Honor Code. She is half-sister to Florida Won, a multiple graded stakes winner who earned nearly $600,000, to stakes placed Grand Journey, and to the dam of current stakes performer Spicy Marg.

The second dam, Grand Portege, is a daughter of stakes performer and famed producer Oatsee. That makes Grand Portege a half-sister to the brilliant and versatile racehorse and sire Shackleford, winner of the Preakness Stakes (G1), Metropolitan Handicap (G1), and Clark Handicap (G1). His beaten foes in those races included a bevy of elite performers, including Kentucky Derby (G1) champion Animal Kingdom, Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) victor Mucho Macho Man, and multiple G1 winners Caleb’s Posse and To Honor and Serve. Grand Portege is also half-sister to Lady Joanne, heroine of the Alabama Stakes (G1) and two other graded stakes winners; Afleeting Lady and Baghdaria; as well as stakes winner and graded stakes placed Stephanoatsee (by A.P. Indy, thus bred similarly to the dam of this colt); and Haysee, the dam of Uncle Lino, a record-breaking stakes winner, grade one performer, and stakes sire.

Oatsee is a sister to Mille Lacs, the granddam of Firenze Fire, a grade one winner of over $2,750,000, and of stakes winner Andiamo a Firenze. Their dam, stakes placed With Every Wish, is from the family of grade one winner Tappiano, out of Taminette, a sister to English classic winner and major sire Known Fact, and half-sister to Secrettame, dam of dynasty founding sire Gone West.

This colt is bred on the TrueNicks A rated cross of Street Sense over an A.P. Indy-line mare, a cross that has produced 16 stakes winners, including grade one winners Maxfield and Speaker’s Corner. Maxfield and Speaker’s Corner both speak to the popularity of this cross among potential sires – they stand for $40,000 and $20,000 respectively. The presence of Mr. Prospector on the dam’s side also attracts comparisons to Street Sense’s four-time G1 winner McKinzie, who has stamped himself as a sire to watch with impressive sales results from his first crop.
