The OBS March Sale has a long history of churning out top class racehorses. Six champions, 24 millionaires, and six horses accounting for seven Breeders’ Cup victories have emerged from the Ocala, Florida showcase. In fact, graduates have won or placed in over 230 stakes races, including over 80 graded, since the beginning of 2016 alone. The Centennial Farms acquisition team, long led by Paula Parsons and Dr. Stephen Carr, combed through this year’s offerings for a colt who represents the athletic type packaged with a stallion’s pedigree that we strive to have on our roster.
CANDYGRAM
CANDY RIDE – CHURCH CAMP, by FOREST CAMP
An undefeated, record-breaking Champion, Candy Ride’s spectacular deeds as a racehorse proved an appropriate prequel to his exceptional career as a sire.
Candy Ride is now sire of more than 60 stakes winners, 28 graded, and ten of them grade one. Among the best of Candy Ride’s current representatives is Centennial Farms’ brilliant colt, Unified. Winner of four of his first five starts, Unified captured the Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III) and Peter Pan Stakes (gr. III) at three, and most recently opened his 2017 campaign with a victory in the Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes (gr. III). Other notables by Candy Ride include Champion Shared Belief; Gun Runner, a grade one winner of over $4,300,000; exciting young sire Twirling Candy; and other grade one winners Mastery, Sidney’s Candy, Evita Argentina, Misremembered, Capt. Candyman Can, El Brujo and Home Sweet Aspen. These exploits have landed him among the top five leading sires each of the last three years.
Centennial Farms’ latest offering is a rugged Candy Ride two-year-old colt out of $150,000 stakes winner Church Camp. A winner of four races at two and three, Church Camp earned her black-type with a victory in the Santa Lucia Stakes at Santa Anita. Church Camp’s promising first foal, Singsong, was a maiden special weight and allowance winner on the NYRA circuit at two.
Church Camp is out of Holy Forest, a winning half-sister to $750,000 earner Middlesex Drive. An extremely durable and consistent runner, Middlesex Drive captured the Kelso Handicap (gr. II), Bernard Baruch Handicap (gr. II) and Dixie Handicap (gr. II). He also placed in four other graded stakes, including the Manhattan Handicap (gr. I). Church Camp’s third dam, two-year-old winner York Woods, is out of a sister to graded stakes performer Misinform, the dam of Overwhelming, a stakes winner and second place finisher in the Gazelle Handicap (gr. I).
The family traces back to the great foundation mare, Frizette, also ancestress of Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew, and via the same branch as Champion Sprinter Shecky Greene.
