Wicked Strong joins “Ipswich Gang”

By | Latest News, Wicked Strong

Nearly twelve years to the day that Centennial Farms signed the Keeneland September ticket for a colt named Moyne Spun, he’s rejoining the family. Wicked Strong has been pensioned from stud duty and arrived in Ipswich, Massachusetts. The new gelding is now at the home of Centennial Farms’ President Don Little, Jr. and the Little family.

Always highly regarded as a youngster, the son of Hard Spun’s larger story began to unfold in the spring of his two-year-old season. In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, he was renamed in honor of Centennial’s hometown and its residents. More meaningfully, a pledge was made to donate a percentage of his earnings to the One Fund, a charity set up to assist those who had been affected by the tragedy. That partnership, coupled with the ride Wicked Strong took everyone on, proved to be one of the most rewarding experiences anyone at Centennial has been involved in.

After undergoing his early training with Paula Parsons and her team in Middleburg, Wicked Strong joined trainer Jimmy Jerkens at Belmont Park on June 5, 2013. Wicked Strong broke his maiden impressively in his second career start and wrapped up his three-race two-year-old campaign with a third-place effort in the G2 Remsen.

An unlucky start to his sophomore year in Florida left him ready for a breakout performance in his return to New York and he delivered. Wicked Strong pulled clear to a 3 1/2-length victory in the G1 Wood Memorial to stamp his ticket to the Kentucky Derby. He put forth a remarkable performance at Churchill Downs, finishing fourth despite traffic troubles after stumbling out of post twenty, and followed that up by dead-heating for fourth, with Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome, in the Belmont Stakes. A tremendous summer at Saratoga followed – he turned the tables on Belmont winner Tonalist with a 2 1/4-length victory in the G2 Jim Dandy and was just nailed on the wire by stablemate V. E. Day in the G1 Travers. His season ended on a scary note when impeded with in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Regular rider Rajiv Maragh suffered a broken arm and while “Wicked” was miraculously unscathed, the decision was made to stop on him for the year. He returned to Middleburg, where the shoes he was wearing that day still hang on the barn wall.

Despite going winless as a four-year-old, Wicked Strong’s toughness, consistency, and talent were on display throughout the year. He added a stakes-placing on turf to his resume and his additional graded stakes placings included both the G1 Whitney and G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. He retired sound, thanks to the efforts of trainer Jimmy Jerkens, racing manager Dr. Stephen Carr, and more, after the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, with another strong effort and career earnings north of $1.9 million.

Throughout it all, Wicked Strong’s popularity remained steadfast. He was embraced by the Boston community, earning headlines and a sizable cheering section at Suffolk Downs for simulcasting. Over $34,000 was raised via his on-track exploits alone for the One Fund and his success undoubtedly helped generate more. He is unquestionably one of the most popular horses to carry Centennial’s famed red and tan colors in the organization’s 42-year history.

Wicked Strong retired to Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky in the fall of 2015, where he remained for five years before relocating to Dr. William Solomon’s Pin Oak Lane Farm in New Freedom, Pennsylvania. At stud, he was represented by champion Wicked Runner, G2 winners Brooklyn Strong and Wicked Crane, multiple graded stakes placed Jilted Bride, and more. Over the summer, the decision was made to pension Wicked Strong, who was gelded and returned to Spendthrift Farm. While other options were on the table for his future, nothing felt as right as bringing him to Massachusetts.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring Wicked Strong home,” said Don Little, Jr. “He provided us with some of the greatest memories of our lives and we can’t wait to spend the rest of his life spoiling him and thanking him… and maybe hopping aboard! Our thanks to everyone at Spendthrift Farm and Pin Oak Lane Farm for prioritizing his well-being over the years and for coordinating with us to give us this opportunity.”

Spendthrift Farm’s General Manager, Ned Toffey, is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he also played football. “Ned’s ties to Massachusetts always made it feel particularly appropriate to have Wicked at Spendthrift and he was instrumental in this process,” added Little.

Wicked Strong joins fellow former Centennial runners and stakes winners Mihos and Securitiz in the barn overseen by Holly Little, filling a stall formerly occupied by multiple graded stakes placed Convocation, lost earlier this summer to laminitis. Convocation enjoyed eleven wonderful years of retirement.

“Convocation was a true character who we miss dearly. While he will never be replaced, it’s hard not to see a bit of fate in the timing of everything. Caring for the ‘Ipswich Gang,’ has been my sweat, dedication, and commitment year-round and I’m thrilled to welcome Wicked to the group,” said Holly Little.

Wicked Strong will be allowed to settle in to his new home before any decisions will be made regarding hosting visitors.

Centennial Farms, owned by Don Little, Jr., Peter Horvitz, and Margaret O’Meara, are fervent advocates for responsible aftercare, an ethos shared by the partners involved with each horse. Each partnership is set-up with funding for a separate, interest-bearing aftercare account strictly for the use of any Centennial horse past or present who may need assistance or as a donation to a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-accredited organization. Centennial Farms is a longtime proud sponsor of the TAA’s Best Turned Out Horse Awards on Gulfstream Park’s Pegasus World Cup Day and a regular supporter of a number of TAA-accredited organizations, including Old Friends, Racing For Home, ReRun, Second Stride, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, and Turning For Home.

Centennial Speaks as OwnerView Success Story

By | Latest News, Wicked Strong

The unofficial Centennial Farms kick-off to 2016 came not on the racetrack but at a conference. Don Little, Jr. was invited to speak at the National Owners Conference held at Gulfstream Park. Horse Racing Radio Network’s Mike Penna hosted the panel entitled “Pursuing Your Dream: Success Stories from Thoroughbred Owners.” Joining Centennial’s Little on the panel were Sheila Rosenblum of Lady Sheila Stables and Ken Ramsey of Ramsey Farms. The trio traded stories about their time in the industry, the philosophies that have lead to their success, and what the sport of racing has done for them. New Owner of The Year Sol Kumin joined the group to offer a different perspective and embrace his title.

You can enjoy the entire the panel, including its introduction by the great Tom Durkin, thanks to OwnerView’s YouTube channel.

Spendthrift Welcomes Wicked Strong

By | Horizon, Latest News, Wicked Strong

The star of the Horizon, LLC headed off to his second career on November 1. Wicked Strong, a $375,000 yearling purchase who went on to earn just shy of $2 million, settled in to his retirement at Spendthrift Farm two days after his bid to become our second Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner.

Several members of the Centennial Farm team and Wicked Strong’s ownership group headed to one of Lexington’s crown jewels to see Wicked’s new home and wish him well as he embarks on his next chapter as a stallion. It is a testament to our system that from our small classes, Wicked Strong is the seventh stallion we have retired to one of the world’s top farms. Spendthrift Farm has joined Gainesway Farm, Lane’s End Farm, Widden Stud, and more in welcoming our graduates to their prestigious rosters. It’s no wonder – the Centennial influence can be found right near the top of the stallion rankings. Worldwide sensation War Front is out of a daughter of our brilliant Rubiano. Offspring of Centennial stallions have made their presence known in G1 company in every corner of the globe – from Australia to South Africa to right here at home.

Wicked Strong has been tremendously well-received, particularly through the innovative “Share the Upside” program which allows early supporters to obtain lifetime breeding rights. We look forward to watching him reward their faith as he so often rewarded ours.

Wicked Strong looks to score in Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

Could join Centennial’s Corinthian in history books

It’s hard to believe that it’s been eight years since Corinthian splashed to victory on a sloppy Monmouth Park track to take the inaugural edition of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Our occasionally difficult, always talented color-bearer stormed home to a 6 1/2-length victory, solidifying him as the best middle-distance dirt horse on the planet. This Monday, October 19, Wicked Strong fired a bullet work at Belmont to indicate all systems are go to be back on racing’s biggest stage in the 2015 edition.

Wicked Strong is among 16 pre-entered for the $1,000,000 race, which is scheduled for 4:10 PM EDT on Friday, October 30. The other entries, which will be capped at twelve for the race, are: Appealing Tale, Barbados, Bradester, Lea, Liam’s Map, Midnight Storm, Mr. Z, Mshawish, Nates Mineshaft, Red Vine, Street Strategy, Tapiture, Valid, War Envoy, and War Story. The group tops $14 million in combined earnings with over 80 victories and 29 graded stakes wins.

We are thrilled to have retained the services of Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez for Wicked Strong. Velazquez, a two-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Jockey, ranks third all-time in number of Breeders’ Cup victories.

Wicked Strong Heading to Spendthrift Farm

By | Horizon, Latest News, Wicked Strong

We are absolutely thrilled that Wicked Strong will be retiring to Spendthrift Farm in Lexington at the conclusion of his racing career. B. Wayne Hughes and his team have assembled one of the best young stallion rosters in the nation. The top twenty leading first and second-crop sire lists both have multiple Spendthrift representatives, including Archarcharch and Warrior’s Reward. The elder statesman of the Spendthrift roster, Malibu Moon, is a Top-10 sire whose progeny include a Kentucky Derby winner. There is little doubt that the current residents are well on their way to living up to the history of one of Kentucky’s great properties. Two Triple Crown winners, multiple Kentucky Derby winners, and several leading sires have called Spendthrift home.

Wicked Strong is a natural for Spendthrift’s prestigious roster. As a Grade 1 winner of over $1.9 million, he stands to be among the leading earners in the star-studded stallion barn. Wicked Strong is the natural next step toward carrying the immortal Danzig blood into another generation. He is the most accomplished offspring of one of Danzig’s best sons in Hard Spun. That noteworthy pedigree is joined by classic good looks to make Wicked Strong a can’t-miss stallion prospect.

“You would be hard-pressed to find a better physical from the Danzig line,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “He’s an exceptional-looking horse and full of class and quality.”

Those with faith in his ability to produce top-class offspring will be rewarded through Spendthrift’s renowned “Share the Upside” program which allows early pioneers to obtain lifetime breeding rights. He is currently available for a $10,000 fee, which is subject to change pending the results of Wicked Strong’s next start – the prestigious G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. More information is available via The Blood-Horse.

Looking for Wicked Strong Finish on Final Spa Weekend

By | Horizon, Latest News, Wicked Strong

The closing weekend feature at Saratoga Race Course is the 62nd running of the prestigious Grade 1 Woodward. Our own Wicked Strong drew the rail as the third choice in his attempt to end the meet in style.

Favored in the field is G1 Whitney runner-up Liam’s Map, who heads a four-deep, speedy battalion from the barn of trainer Todd Pletcher. The lightly raced four-year-old seeks his first career graded stakes victory after being nailed on the line last out. His stablemates, Coach Inge, Protonico, and Mylute, have won or placed in the G1 Preakness, G1 Clark, G2 Alysheba, and G2 Brooklyn, among other blacktype efforts.

Our own trainer, Jimmy Jerkens, also sends out second choice Effinex, winner of the G2 Suburban at Belmont in July. The multi-horse entries for Pletcher and Jerkens will be joined in the gate by Dallas Stewart’s Commanding Curve, runner-up in last year’s G1 Kentucky Derby, and Bay of Plenty, who took the Alydar Stakes last out for Kiaran McLaughlin.

Wicked Strong enters the race off of a sneaky good effort when fourth in August 8th’s Whitney. While he has experienced some bad luck in 2015, including being virtually eliminated at the start of the G1 Met Mile, Wicked continues to train forwardly at Saratoga. He enters the Woodward off back-to-back bullet works, including a 36.83 blowout over the Oklahoma track on Wednesday morning. He will be joined once again by Luis Saez, who currently trails only Irad Ortiz, Jr., multiple Eclipse Award winner Javier Castellano, and Hall of Famer John Velazquez in the standings.

The $600,000 Woodward Stakes is carded as the tenth race on a twelve race card at Saratoga on Saturday, September 5. Tune in to NBC Sports Network beginning at 5pm to cheer on Wicked Strong! Post time is at 5:47 Eastern.

Wicked Fun Saturday on Tap

By | Horizon, Latest News, Wicked Strong

There is little doubt that Saturday, August 8 at Saratoga Race Course promises to be memorable. Over 100 partners, family, and friends will join together at America’s oldest sporting venue to enjoy and participate in one of the hallmark days of the country’s most prestigious meet.

Fan favorite Juba, whose twitter account has an audience of over 1,600, is the second choice in the day’s sixth race. Unraced since tangling with Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist in the Grade 3 Westchester at Belmont Park in May, Juba enters the race off of a sharp 35.44 drill over the Saratoga training track on Tuesday. Favored in the race is Ocean Knight, winner of the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis in January, but off since early March. Juba retains the services of regular rider Luis Saez in a salty field that also includes Havana, winner of the 2013 Grade 1 Champagne, and the graded stakes placed duo of Crafty Dreamer and Souper Knight.

The competition only gets tougher from there as our 2014 Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner Wicked Strong lines up in what is likely the toughest race of 2015 so far. The historic Whitney routinely draws the best older horses in the country and the 88th edition is no exception. Nearly every horse in the field is a Grade 1 winner, with victories including the Metropolitan Handicap, Belmont Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Stephen Foster, Whitney, Travers, and Donn. We began the week at the post position draw, where NYRA’s Andy Serling interviewed our own Don Little about drawing the nine, prepping on grass, and more.

Post time for Juba’s Saratoga debut is 3:55 Eastern. The Whitney, with a scheduled post time of 5:46, is part of live NBC coverage from 5-6pm.

Wicked Strong’s Inspiration to My Father

By | Horizon, Latest News, Wicked Strong

Written by racing fan Patrick Kenneally

I want to express my thankfulness for all that Centennial has done with Wicked Strong and the story of the name. Not only have you shown support for Boston and the Marathon survivors, Wicked Strong has provided my father with inspiration while he battles leukemia.

We live right near Saratoga Race Course but are currently in Louisville, Kentucky for my father’s chemo treatments. The Travers race has always been exciting for us being near Saratoga. My father immediately picked Wicked Strong as his pick for the race once the field was set. As a family we embraced the mentality to be Wicked Strong. Our motto is that “Bill is Wicked Strong”; Bill is my father. My father has President Don Little’s quote about “no matter the highs and lows in life you must move forward” on the wall in his hospital room.

As Travers day came my dad was all aglow about watching Wicked Strong’s race, he even had me place bets on the race which he never does. The whole Travers day was a great distraction from the normal routine of being in the hospital. Dad could not have been happier watching that race. He was filled with so much inspiration watching Wicked Strong’s effort that he got out of bed and went for a walk for the first time in two days. He was like a thoroughbred how fast he was going through the halls.

His treatments will be over in a week and on Labor Day they will be doing a bone marrow test to see how successful it was. If he is able to come back to New York we will be so thankful.

My father is wicked strong and will beat leukemia; we thank you for giving us Wicked Strong to rally around.

**Update as of September 9 – the results of Bill Kenneally’s bone marrow biopsy came back and he is officially in remission from his leukemia. We wish him continued “wicked” good health.
